How to Make a Carbon Filter for a Grow Room

  • The Air Passage

Air passage of a carbon filter is a cylindrical area between the filter openings. You can make the air passage to be anything from 4 inches to 8 inches. The openings should be of the same diameter as the inline fan and ducting. 

This will ensure that the inline fan and ducting system will push the air from your to grow tent to the filter without any escaping. 

  • The Body

The air carbon filter body is a composition of activated charcoal, outer, and inner mesh. The body secures the filter and makes it a dust-free intake. It ensures that air passes from the pre-filter to the carbon layer without attracting any dust from the grow tent. 

  • Pre-filter

This is a breathable and a semi-transparent medium placed around the filter body. It gives minimal air resistance to the filter. As a result, it let’s air pass through the carbon bed for cleaning.

The procedure for Making a Carbon Filter for a Grow Room

This is the procedure for making a carbon filter for a 6-inch ducting system. The same procedure should also be applied in making a 4”, 8” or any other diameter you would wish to. The only difference will be the mesh pencil holder sizes. Choose the ones that fit exactly to the size of the dimension you would like to make. 

Once you decide your diameter size depending on your ducting system, follow the steps below to make the carbon filter on your own. 

Step 1: Set Up the Two Pencil Holders

This is the most important step in making the filter. The sizes of the two pencils should complement each other. 

Ensure that their diameter and height are the same. The diameter of the pencil holders should be the same as the diameter of your ducting system. However, the two pencils should be prepared in a way that you can put a smaller pencil holder to the bigger one. 

The height of the smaller holder should be ¾ of the bigger cup’s height. Its diameter should also be smaller than the diameter of the bigger pencil holder. 

Step 2: Drill Holes

The cups should be permeable from all sides. To ensure that, drill small holes on the bottom side of each cup. Drill the holes, depending on the size of the pencil holder. 

Technically, the bigger holder should have more holes than the smaller cup. 

Be also careful when drilling your cups, especially if your cup is made of delicate material such as aluminum material. 

Step 3: Put Socks on Both Cups

Take one sock for each cup. Put the socks from the bottom side of the cup. Once done, wrap it around it. Repeat the same procedure with the other cup. 

Step 4: Fill the Activated Carbon

Fill the activated carbon at the bottom of the larger cup. Fill up to the half of its length. 

Before you fill the cups, granulate your charcoal to small uniform sizes. Remove any large size charcoal that could be left in the granulated carbon. 

However, when making a carbon filter for a large grow tent, don’t granulate the carbon to very small sizes. However, the cups should be large enough to accommodate a high volume of airflow. 

Step 5: Seal the Activated Carbon

Put the small cup inside the large cup. Ensure it seals the bottom of the large cup where you have filled with activated carbon. Then pull the socks off the outer cup to cover the body of the small cup. The small cup will be longer than the larger cup. 

Hold the cup securely and make an even of both cups. 

As you tie, the activated charcoal will fill the space between the two cups. Push the small cup down until it of the same height with the larger cup. 

In the end, fill the space left between the cups with activated charcoal. The last thing to do will be to put the cups in an upright position. Ensure you adjust them necessarily. The openings of both cups should be on the same level. 

Pull the socks of the inner cup and tighten it around the outer cup. Ensure you do it evenly when pulling the socks. 

Step 6: Attach the Carbon Filter to Your 6” Fan or Ducting

By this stage, you already have an effective carbon filter. The only thing that you need to do now is to place it over the fan or ducting system of your grow tent. 

The connection should be strong and tight. There should be no air gap left. 

Making a Bigger Carbon Filter for a Grow Room

When making different sizes of a carbon filter, you will need different materials. However, the steps are the same. 

If you wish to have a large size filter, you need large pencil holders and large particles of activated carbon. And when your focus is making a smaller filter, you need to ensure the materials and carbon particles are small. 

The dimensions of your materials should be determined by your fan or ducting system installed in your grow room.

  • Polyester filter material instead of socks
