How do you hang grow lights? This is a frequently asked question. It means many people are struggling with their grow lights. So, if you have found yourself in this situation, you aren’t alone.

But its pretty simple. Once you have all the tools that you need, you can easily hang the lights. You don’t even need to hire a specialist to do the work for you.

In this article, we will discuss systematic steps that you can follow to hang the lights by yourself in your grow room.

But before you begin the whole process, ensure you have planned your installation well.

Plan Your Grow Room Before Anything Else

Planning is the first step in ensuring that you put grow room together before anything else. For efficiency, you need to plan all the aspects.

First, you need to understand your plant’s need for light. This will determine other factors such as the type of hanging system you will need to use. At the same time, you need to be sure you have all the material you need for the installation of the lights.

A good and well thought out plan will make the whole light installation simple.

If you are not an expert in plant lighting, you can consult with your expert. Agricultural officers will help you know the level of light you will need for the exact plant in your grow tent.

Cost is another critical factor that shouldn’t be overlooked in this stage. Ensure you understand every cost you will incur to hang the lights. This will prevent the cases of starting the installation and leaving it halfway during installation.

So, before you begin to ensure you have the following details in your plan.

  • The type of lighting you need for your plants
  • Equipment needed in installation
  • Cost of installation
  • Method of light installation

As mentioned, it’s essential to consult with an agricultural officer around your area before you think of hanging any light. Unless you are an expert, you won’t know the best lights for your plants.

Once you have every plan, lights, and hanging tools ready you can follow the following procedure to hang them.

Procedure to Hang Grow Lights From Ceiling

Step 1: Identify the Right Spot On Your Ceiling

Your light needs to be firmly hanged over the ceiling. To start the work to hang the lights over the ceiling, you need to first begin by identifying a firm and stud place over your ceiling.

Grow lights are heavy and need to be well supported. Use a stud finder to locate a ceiling joint; when the stud finder beeps to mark the area.

Step 2: Drill Holes on the Spot

At this point, you have already identified spots where you would place your lights. The next step would be to drill holes where you would hang the lighting system.

You can choose to install a joist for a heavier light system or directly install light hangers over the ceiling. These are specifically for the lightless weight.

Step 3: Install Hooks for Lights and Joist for Light-reflector Combo

At this step, you need to be careful with everything you do. Once you mess up with this step, you mess up with everything else. But you shouldn’t worry – we will give you detailed information about everything you need to do.

Installation of the grow light-reflector combo and the number of growing the plants in the grow tent will determine lights. The stage of the plants and the distance between the canopy is the main determinant of these two factors.

How to Install a Grow Light-Reflector Combo

In your grow tent, you will need to have several light-reflector Combo. One thing you need to know about Combos is that they are heavy to hang on one or a few hoots.

To install, you would need a wood joist to the ceiling.

Once you have installed the wooden joists, set up hooks. They will support your hanging light-reflector Combos. If you wish to install more than one light, all you need is a single screw every light.

At this stage, you don’t hang your light reflector, Combo. All you have done is to set up hangers and joists to hold and support your lighting system.

Step 4: Time to Setup A Light Hanger

In the previous steps, we have installed a supporting platform for your light systems. At this stage, your goal is to install ropes that you will use to control the height of your lights.

If you are not aware, you need to adjust the lights in your grow room at different stages of your plants. Plants’ need for light differs over time. So, at some point, you will need to lower/higher your lights for your plants to get a maximum yield.

In the market, there are two options of ratchet ropes to choose from – a 3/8 inch and a ¼ — inches nylon rope ratchet.

If your lighting system is not heavy, buying 3/8 inches will be perfect. But if your lighting system is heavy, you should buy a ¼. Inches.

The ropes are available on Amazon. Order them today and install them over your grow room. If you have already skipped this step in your grow room, you can buy the ropes and hang your lights. The ropes should be held by the hooks that you installed in the previous step.

Step 5: Hang the Lighting System

At this stage, all you need is to hang your lighting system over the rope support. Hang your light-reflector combo and ensure you balance their heights properly.

Step 6: Suspend the Lights on a Correct Height

The last thing you need to do is to set up the correct height for your plants. The lights should be hanged depending on the plants, intensity of your light beams, and the stages your plants are in.

But what matters most is the nature of light you have bought. Different lights have different watts hence the difference in light intensity. If you wrongly install the lights, they will overheat your grow room. This is a serious problem when it comes to growing rooms.

If you are hanging your lights, we recommend you consider the following hanging techniques.

  • Powerful HID Lights: Hang them about 48 to 62 inches away from your plants.
  • Less Powerful HID Lights: Hang the lights 24 to 36 inches away from the plants.
  • Fluorescent Grow lights: Should be 5 inches above the plants.
  • LED Grow lights: Approximately 5 to 20 inches away from your plants.
